on this 1955 D cent on the adverse would that be just circulation damage because the coin is beat up but I can't tell if that's circulation damage or if there's something in there on the coin

The front of a coin is called the "Obverse"
It just looks like circulation damage, something has pushed the metal causing a ridge.
Whatever caused it, it couldn't happen during the striking of the coin so it is PMD.

Post strike damage. Just a Wheat cent now. The difference? If it were a die issue, the areas would be raised. If the areas you are looking at are incuse (below the normal surface) then it is just damage to the coin. That is what I'm seeing on your coin. (Showing my cards on the table so you will now see what I see on your coin)
