I was quite happy this morning when I received an email from the mint saying that my UHR had been shipped out. Low and behold, late this afternoon a UPS truck stops by and delivered it. I guess they are trying to make up for the earlier problems. Fact is that I got an email from them on Feb 24 saying my Lincoln Unc and Proof had been shipped and I'm still waiting for them. The coin is beautiful without a doubt. The only thing that I question is the airtight that the coin is housed in, it just does not seem to be tall enough to have the top close completely. By that I mean that there is space to put a thick fingernail between the two halves(as if opening it). I hope this makes sense as taking pictures is impossible. I only have a couple of coins in air tights and the two halves of them close completely. Has anyone that received theirs seen anything like this? Does anyone think that this is how it should be? Personally I would rather have a good fitting air tight rather then the beautiful presentation box.

I'm surprised that there has been no replies to this! I've got to decide what to do fairly quickly in order to meet the mints new 7 day return policy and would appreciate any thoughts.
I'm thinking long term storage here and I don't believe that this coin is adequately protected that way it is. And I'm worried about trying to mash the two sides together with much force in fear that would mar or mark the soft metal.

Probably not much help, but the Silver Eagle Proof I just bought is the same way. I think it was intended to leave a space for a fingernail to open it if desired?

My coin was loose within the air-tite until I read you post
Then I squeezed it tighter, I also attempted to open the air-tite to photograph the Eagle but was unable to separate the 2 halves using a butter knife I worked my way around it about 5 times but couldn't get it more then half separated so I gave up

You're right I should have used Ultra High Relief Double Eagle Gold Coin or something similar. On mine, the airtight wasn't even properly positioned in the presentation box, it had come out and was loose in the box which made me look closely. Mine was loose in the airtight just like wif99 mentioned. It was when I pressed the two halves together that I noticed the gap between the two. It was difficult but I was able to separate the two halves using my fingernails. I took a couple of pictures, enjoy!

Nice looking coin there. I still am thinking I would rather have an older saint-Gaudens though

I think it's easier to buy a new coin, it will be a while before I feel comfortable dropping the same amount or more on a older Saint-Gaudens. But someday I think an older one would go great alongside this one!

Thanks for the pics akglen! I have a few Australian Kookaburra proofs that have plastic holders that fit as you describe. The fit is snug, so there's no risk of them falling off but there is a gap of 1-2 millimeters where the two sides don't come together. My coins are worth under $100 so I'm not concerned. You might consider some type of sealant if the possibility exists that the holder could separate.

When I received mine it was floating around inside the box, but apparently this is quite common for the Mint. My holder was tightly closed though, no space like you describe. I just have to return anyway due to the big ugly black mark right over my date!

I'm not sure I understand exactly what the problem is since the containers the coins come in don't do anything to protect the coins against the environment anyway. They are not air tight containers. They are simply plastic protectors to keep the coins from being scratched during shipping.

Quote: They are not air tight containers. Right. The name "Air-Tite" is inaccurate and not just the spelling. I think akglen's OP was concerned more with the coin's safety in a loose holder than with it being hermetically sealed. That gives me an idea! If someone could come up with a cheap, truly air tight holder that would leave our precious coins in a vacuum - they would make a fortune!
