Very new to collecting and been trying to learn what I can from trail and error. So I liked to ask if anyone has any links to share for a good starting point of information on collecting. I figure I should start with some of the basics. Any info or links would be greatly appreciated. Thank You All in advance.

@hag, there is a whole world of collecting out there, so can you help us narrow it down a bit? For example, are you interested US coins or coins from somewhere else? Modern or older? Thx.

@hag, I moved your thread here so that more eyes get on it. For sure, the Red Book is a good spot to start with reference materials on US coins.

Hi HAG, and welcome to both the hobby and the Forum! You've posted about Lincoln Wheat Cents in the past - is that your favorite coin? It's a great series to start with, as many of us began with them. But no matter your particular interest, you should acquire a Red Book to acquaint yourself with the vast numismatic history of US coins. Best wishes!

HAG1973, Are you looking to collect errors, varieties, high grade? You are going to need to focus on one or two areas of the hobby. You will need to learn grading no matter what so: https://www.PCGS.com/photograde/Mint state coins or proof? Modern or old? So many choices you need to consider. Let us know what you narrow down to and we will direct you. John1

to the CCF In addition to the Red Book recommendation, survey all the sub forums here at the CCF and include our experts as a resource for questions as you learn.

When I started, I found the Red Book very helpful. Grab some of your coins, look them up in the Red Book, read and learn ... follow along with their grading descriptions and compare yours. This practice led me to a high level of enjoyment, in coin collecting.
