So I sold a 2000 Cheerios cent on ebay in January that I had in my collection for over two decades. Sent and received by the buyer on Jan 15th.

Yesterday, buyer gives me positive feedback...but it says "I got what I paid for"

Then the buyer requests a refund...stating that the cent was defective.

Claims that I removed the cent and resealed on the original card with a new different piece of plastic. I guess he thought I really wanted that 2000 Cheerio cent...and replaced it with a mint state replacement 2000 cent.

And with ebay, I had no choice but to agree to the return.

I normally don't have many problems, but really...defective...Ok off my soap box

As far as I know it's just a normal circulation cent in the package.

It is the Cheerios dollar that has value.
The cent was just an uncirculated business strike.

The Cheerio cent still sells at a premium for some reason.

I agree that it is just an uncirculated cent, and doesn't have the rarity of the dollar that ended up being a variation. That is why the implication that it was opened and resealed even more outlandish.

idk...just annoyed by a silly small dollar transaction return. The kind that after postage is refunded, costs you money.

Thanks for letting me vent.

The cost of doing business includes this type of nonsense, all too often.

In my opinion they are paying for provenance, nothing more.

Last I looked they sell for $5 to $15 in the package, likely just riding on the coat tails of the dollar.

My experience in business, including ebay / craigslist / marketplace, leads me to practice the "5% rule". There are 5% of the people out there that will cause issues, regardless of the circumstances. In so doing, I am not surprised that it happens and consequently, waste little emotional energy when things like you described happen. This also means that 95% of my experiences are terrific ... satisfying and enjoyable.
