This was a pickup a little bit ago at a local show, never got around to taking pictures.

It's mislabeled too, it's correctly identified as Snow-3 FS-105. FS-101 is actually Snow-4 which is easily identified by the rim Cud above STATES, which is clearly missing from this die.

I got it for $45, which is the price of this coin in a F grade without a variety so I'm guessing the dealer didn't care for the DDO, given these are quite desirable and still bring strong premiums, especially when this strong. This is far more difficult to find than S-4 in my experience so it was a "can't pass on this for the price" kind of deal.

The coin itself is original with pleasing surfaces and a nice circulated patina although my photos don't do that justice. I feel F-12 is appropriate but PCGS may drop it to a VG-10 at which I won't be surprised. This one will be getting crossed over someday for my registry, although not sure how soon.

Thanks for taking a look!

Very nice pick up I once bought a similar graded one raw on ebay as a cherrypick, they are tough to find, but pretty easy to spot if the photos are in focus and clear enough.

Is the eye doubled too with this DDO? Is so, that is extra cool.

Very nice pickup and thanks for the background. I haven't looked at FE recently so this is a nice refresher.

A little confused here. I thought this coin is S-4.

Thanks all! And Pete, this is S-3 FS-105. The label is incorrect. S-4 always has a rim Cud above STATES and a slightly different shift in doubling.

Correct this is obviously a SNOW S3 Flying Eagle cent, but the confusion here, I believe is, Coinhunter27 saying the label is incorrect - yet the label IS only partially correct it even says S3. However the FS number is wrong is the only issue - it is NOT the FS-101 this is an FS-105. Just a simple mechanical error that is causing the trouble.

The corrected label should read as follows:

1857 1C F12
1857 1C
FE DDO FS-105 S-3
F12

Hope that clears it up everyone is correct here on the S3
