I'm trying to piece together an 20th century Afghan type set. I recently came across this coin on ebay. Your input on this crown-sized 5 Ruppee would be greatly appreciated.

If you can get it for a decent price I'd go for it. If it's anywhere near the Krause price I'd hold off since the condition of the coins doesn't really scream "Buy Me!"

GO - The date is tucked in to the upper left hand loop of the toughra.

The condition of the coin doesn't bother me. Most Afghan coins from the early 20th century were poorly struck and well circulated. What does concern me is the brassy color where the coin has seen wear. This coin is suppose to be 90% silver. Am I wrong, or does something look not quite right?

If you are putting a 20th century set together why do you want one of these?

1) I like the coins. These coins were minted with only one purpose in mind, circulation. The dies for many of the coins minted in the early half of the century were so badly overused that die cracks and other signs of deterioration are quite common.

2) I like the challenge. Not including gold and proofs, there are 153 coins for the set. After collecting for over a year I have about 25% of these. They are not easy to come by. Most dealers look at me like I'm crazy when I ask if they have any Afghan coins.

3) Affordability. Currently there is not a whole lot of competition for these coins.

What I mean is why do you want this particular coin, it's from the 19th century.
