Has anyone seen this before? I'm pretty sure I have the description right. Just saying improperly annealed quarter wouldn't be doing this coin justice. Any info or comments appreciated. Thanks for looking

@rw, that is a pretty quarter. Can you describe for my what you mean by "dual planchet"? Are you suggesting that this quarter is twice as thick as a regular one? I'm not familiar with this term so just trying to learn something. Thx.

Thanks Spence. I think that there were two blank planchettes on this planchette when they were being annealed. Here's what I think that looked like

I backed the two quarters up a little here and the outline seems to match

Ok interesting thx for that explanation. Your idea is an interesting one, but not sure how that would happen in current minting equipment. If the blanks are stacked a little as you describe, I think that the temp in the oven would be the same and still heat-treat them equally.

I struggle with discerning coins that are improperly annealed from those that have surface toning.

I guess think of it like stacking cookies in the oven. The ones on top won't be the same as the ones on the bottom. The obverse makes it look like it's from somewhere in the middle. The ones I've been finding have what I call annealing lines. I could be wrong but that's what I think is going on. I have many different stages of the same anomaly. I have a few single overlays if that's what I can call it. I don't know what to call this double overlay so I tried to explain what I'm seeing. Also thinking someone has had to see this before

Could have been on a window sill with other coins above it for a time and it altered the color of the coins.

Thanks coop. The coin is bu and has annealing lines like the ones I have posted before. There is rim finning that shows that this happened pre strike. This is not environmental it is definitely an annealing error.http://goccf.com/t/407349
