this scan is of a 1980P Lincoln. is this an example of the "woodgrain" as I see discussed? if so, does this give the coin any premium value? thanks

I would say it is. I have several now in my collection, both U.S. and Canadian and I really like them. I've mention in other threads that I find mine in coin rolls and I would probably pay a premium for one only if it was a really stunning example.

It's a common date circulated coin. They generally bring a slight premium only to someone who is interested in them. The early Lincolns (10's & 20's) are notorious for this improper alloy streaking.

Or just uneven exposure to something. I tossed a couple of these into the junk pile just tonight.

1979-1981 are notorious for this striping. As stated before, it comes from an improper mixture of the copper and zinc used to make the blank strips. In some cases the metal didn't mix properly, and in other cases there are impurities in the metal that cause the streaking. When the coins are uncirculated and red the streaking is nearly invisible. Circulation causes the streaking to become much more evident, which is why nearly all examples collected as such are brown.

These can bring a small premium (up to a dollar) to newer collectors who want this sort of thing and don't have one already, but because these dates are so common for this problem, finding someone who doesn't already have one, knows what they are, and wants one would be a bit difficult.

Really that much of a premium? I find atleast 10 with an extreme wood-grain look and another 5-10 that look like the the one pictured above per box. good thing I keep them, should I make rolls of them and sell em on ebay?
