My intention was to find a solid, realistic portrait of Marcus Aurelius. That's what I've been looking for since the new year began. That does not mean, however, that my eye can't...wander. In my fervent search for a large-size Aurelius, I saw this incredible dupondius of Claudius. I don't think there is an emperor whose image is more varied in quality as that of Claudius. His depictions often stray into the realm of caricature. Sometimes grossly...almost comical in expression. Now...I already possessed a nice Claudius, with what I believed to be the most dutifully realistic portrait I had encountered in my search. Seen here. Certainly some exaggeration, but the best I had seen in terms of realistic features. So when I saw this specimen...I was stunned! Pitted and encrusted as it was, the trademarks of realism shined. Especially the depiction of the eye and proportions of the face. Truly remarkable! By far THIS depiction of Claudius is the best I've seen. I recall reading that Roman coin dies could last as little as two days of strikes before wearing out. That is a tremendous turnover rate! It would require the die-cutters to be many and constantly at work throughout the Empire, creating new dies to meet the demand. Each would have their own skill-set and stylistic preferences. Am I certain this coin bears the most accurate and realistic portrayal of Claudius? Only time will tell, my friends. Only time will tell. Could not resist the temptation to steward this ancient beauty!.

Thank you, dsking. The portrait is remarkable. I was struggling to find a large Aurelius with a suitably realistic portrait when I stumbled upon this dupondius of Claudius. The depiction of the eye is the most telling feature, and this particular ancient artist did a first-rate job.

Another super portrait in the collection, Mike. It's not a bad idea to let the eye wander sometimes.

You are so right, Jim. There are instances when having a "wandering eye" is a good thing! Acquiring a realistic Marcus Aurelius is proving to be a real challenge. The preferred depiction style seems to be one that includes a large, strangely rendered eye. I may have luck in that his early beardless Caesar-types trend towards a more realistic depiction. But this Claudius gives me hope that there are coins from dies that depict Aurelius in a similarly realistic style.

I totally agree, Paul. The features of this portrait are beautifully rendered. Exceptional! Perhaps you have a wandering eye like mine. Similar, shall we say, to that of Marty Feldman. Where one eye simply wanders off to do its own thing. *smile* As for Claudius "emanating a proud stature": Not bad for a guy discovered hiding behind a curtain!

Just thought I would add an update to this Topic now that I have this Claudius in hand. I must say...the coin is even more impressive than I initially believed. The "rusty" appearance is much less apparent and the portrait...is simply awesome. Truly thrilling to hold this specimen, feel its weight, and study the details. The skill of these ancient artisans never ceases to amaze!

I'm so glad the coin surpassed your expectations Mike! It certainly is a lovely portrait depiction by photo. Maybe you could send it to me so I could also see it in the real..

Send it to you? I would certainly do that, Paul, but I'm afraid you might fall in love with this beauty. Sending it back might break your heart. As your friend, I am obliged to protect you from such pains. Love hurts!
