really tough to see the surfaces to assess it. photos too small and shadowing hiding the surfaces. from what I see there are significant amount of the fine lines/scratches on both sides. eagle breast is quite flat but some could be attributed to strike as the 93(P) can be a little weak. lighting is enhancing the remaining luster. I would have graded it AU53 but with the number of marks on the coin I'm betting thats why PCGS lowered it

Agree that this dollar grades no higher than AU-50. The obverse photo shows luster around star #5 and directly across the coin at UM of UNUM. That is all that remains of the luster band that would have been complete on an uncirculated coin.

The old standard for an AU-50 grade was that 50% of the original luster remains. This coin appears to have lost well over half its original luster.

Interesting, I never heard this standard. Nowadays 50% luster is at minimum AU-53.
Suffering from bust half fever.

It looks over-dipped in the images. Completely void dirt, crust, toning or anything else that happens to 130 year-old circulated silver coins. AU50 sounds fair.

Thanks everyone for your contributions! I'm still working on photos.

No I have not followed this coin it's entire life...I'm not that old! In hand there are no indications of cleaning, dipping, and so forth.

I might send it forward again to see what it comes back as now.

dsking my question is why would you resub it? it may upgrade to 53 but there is only about $100 retail difference. the chance it pulls a 55 is pretty slim. I guess its roll of the dice and if you already have a subscription to submit under to reduce the costs
