So, I've lucked up on a load of Ikes and decided that I should put together a collection. I don't have any "S" mints, but I think I've got the others. Could someone tell me if this is all the list would need, excluding "S" mint marks and silvers?

What about these gold toned 76s?

What about these that I have that look to be really really shiny silver? From the edge they look clad, but from the obverse/reverse they look chrome?!?!?!

Any other special varieties? I want to pick out a couple of good sets for me and my kids then release the rest back into the wild.

Thanks ahead of time for the education.

Here are some Eisenhower dollar resource links:

http://www.ikegroup.org/
http://www.supercoin.com/iketypes/
http://www.marketingresponse.com/cc...rrent.asp#a6

All of the silver Eisenhower dollars are actually 40% silver clad, so you will see a silver-copper core from the edge.

The golden dollars are possibly toned (Cu-Ni can acquire a golden tone), but it is also possible that they were plated. If they were plated, then they have lost most of their numismatic value.

Before we make any real determination on the golden and "chrome" dollars you have, can you post some pictures?

Thanks jbuck. The gold ones are definately just toning and not plating. I'll see about a pic of the "chrome" ones. Do the 40% silver clads look like the JFK 40%'s? That's what I was looking for.

Good question, and the answer is yes!

The 40% Eisenhower dollars have the same look as the 40% Kennedy half dollars, but expect to find the dollars in better condition since they never intended to circulate.

AlabamaDan,
There are many varieties within the Eisenhower series and JBucks first website link The Ike Group is definitely the place to start.
Die Clashes, Different reverse varieties such as the 1971-D Friendly Eagle Variety. 1972 Type 2 Reverse's March release and August release.
It has become a real fun series for me to collect. Hope you have fun with it. Knowledge is King in this series

I think one of my 1973s is silver. How can I be sure?

You can look at the reeded edge of the coin and if you see a copper colored band running around the edge like the ones on quarters in your everyday change, It is a clad coin. If the edge is the the same color as the front and the back (Silver Colored) all the way through then you have a 40% silver Eisenhower.

If your 1973S is uncirculated, then it is definitely silver. There were two versions of the 1973S proofs- the regular CuNi clad that came in the normal proof set and the 40% silver clad that was sold separately in a special case(black case in a brown box aka brown Ike). The obvious difference would be weight- CuNi would weigh 22.7 grams while the 40% clad would weigh 24.6 grams.

The 40% silver coins are clad as well. They are have 80% Silver 20% copper outer-layers bonded to a core of 79% copper and 21% silver. The core of the 40% coins appears to be gray, as opposed to the normal brown on a Cu-Ni clad coin.
