Just a damaged 1962 cent.
As stated, the transitional year was1982 when the mint
switched from copper to copper plated zinc planchets.

There were only one style of date that year. What happens is that when the fields are polished on a die, the on the coins, because of the base of the devices being reduced, leaves the overall size a bit smaller. So there are no Large/Small dates that year. A die even can alter the size of the devices, but the master hub that created all the master dies, working hubs and working dies were all the same size. The die that struck your coin may have had a polishing that reduced the size of the devices on the die, making it a die event. (if that really happened) Coin was damage by wire cutters. So it is just melt/face value now.

Even if it is an 8 as you say, it is a common copper Large Date
worth 1 cent in that condition.

Would you please tell me why it is do you think it's a large day and that :-). On the back of it it says, and some writing that it is a small date. I'm only asking because it looks different from the other 50 or 60 other 1982s that I have
