Im just wondering how many countries made silver coins like the ASE in 1988 and what are the prices running on them. Id like some silver and 1988 is my birth year so I'm gonna go from there. Right now I'm just curious as to what all countries and the designs on the coins plus the price on a good looking example. Thanks alot everyone I'm sure you know quite a few. Post pics if possible.

I must check my catalogue at home, I can give you a price range in the evening (8 hours from now:). Then maybe I can give you some idea about Bulgarian silver coins of 1988.

The Australian bullion Kookaburras didn't start until 1990, but we did have the The "Holey Dollar and Dump" bullion coin pair. These were released from 1988 to 1990 with different aboriginal legends illustrated each year. At time of posting, this one's going quite cheaply. The "Holey Dollar" is 1 ounce of silver; apart from that, there's not much in common with the Silver Eagle. Personally, the 1988 Bicentenary $10 silver coin is a much nicer coin - I think it's one of the best in the silver $10 series. It's "only" sterling silver, though.

We have this one as well, but it is in Cupro-nickel...cost is about AUD$10.00. There is a silver proof version of this coin but it is from the MIS of 1989. Sap is absolutely correct in advising the Bicentenary $10 Proof is an excellent coin.

In the year of 1988, S. Korea held the second Olympics in Asia. If I am not wrong, they have released a nice set of silver proof Olympics coins. Of course that goes without saying that there are other countries that have released silver coins. For example, the year of 1988 is the year of dragon in the Chinese zodiac, so there would be a fair bit of countries that would commemorate that. If I remember right, Singapore did mint silver coins from 1984 in silver to commemorate such series, which means 1988 should be in there. The year 1988 is also quite significent during the Soviet era as 1988 is the very year when the Soviets had the chance to mint commemorative coins since the 1980 Moscow Olympics. A nice set of two commemorating 1000 years of Old Russia coinage, literature, the architecture of the baptism of Russia. Featuring the first Russian silver coins minted in St. Vladimir. Featuring St. Sophia Catherdral in Kiev. Thanks to the hot Russian market, such coins are going at extreme prices, even though there is a mintage of 35,000 each. The last I remember, this set was easily screaming over 100 dollars.

I don't want toscare you Chuck, but considering the prices and locations, it may become a long journey collecting all the silver coins minted in 1988. Fist try to collect ones minted in February 1988
