Hey guys I thought I would seek your expertise. I have finnally started to dig through and input all of my coins into an excel sheet when I noticed something a little off about nickles in the 1940-1950ish range. a few of them were a slightly blue color. during the catagorization process I discovered that this is because alot of them have a chrome coating. but my 1951 nickel (comm 1751-1951... halfmoon?) nickel appears a sort of duller regular grey color. I didnt see that variety on coins and canada. so I wanted your input if there is just some natural color variation on Chrome or if I should get this looked into.

I believe no graders are willing to grade this variety.

The 1951 Commemorative is 100% nickel, it has no chrome. It is the 1951 Beaver that has the chrome plating. Your comparing a Nickel coin with a chrome plated coin.

The 1951 coin you show is a coin made of pure nickel not meant to de plated. Chrome plated where years 44,45,51 ,52,53 and 54

Thanks for the responses everyone.
I didnt realize this variety was supposed to be nickle since all the other nickles of the same year were chromed
It might still be the half moon. I didnt zoom in very close with my camera but it does have the mark underneath. I was just more concerned with whether it was supposed to have chrome or not

Quote: I didnt realize this variety was supposed to be nickle The reason being it commemorates the 200th anniversary of the naming of Nickel and shows a Nickel refinery on the Reverse. Also I can't see any sign of a half moon under the 1. Could you take a close up of that area.

Sure thing sorry for the delay. I have tried my best. It could be just a weird mark but its one of those situations where holding it in my hand its easy to spot plain as day little raised spot just under the 1 in sort of a half moon. move it around in the light and its even easier. Might be our stereoscopic vision but try and take a picture of it and it disappears XD

Welcome to the forum Raynac. I can can see the half moon under the one but it's really not that pronounced I wouldn't expect much of a premium. These can be found where it's easily seen with the naked eye as the one below demonstrates. Cheers, Bill

Oh wow Bill! Those half moons are beautiful. Mines is more like a wayward meteorite in comparison.
