I was at the North Shore numismatic coin show in Burnaby a few weeks ago. one of the dealers showed me this monster die chip above the C in Canada. I missed it first pass but then he showed me one without the chip. then he showed me 2 more that he had found. I purchased 2 of them from him as I noticed that 1 of them has a further die chip on the N of Canada. you can see the crack forming on the one without the chip on N so there is no doubt of progression. has anyone seen this particular die chip before? I know there are 3 for sure so probably more out there. they also look like they came from a BU set of some sort but I couldn't tell you which one. This first pic shows the 2 coins plus 2 circulated that I had on hand for comparison. the next 4 pics show the 4 different coins. the first 2 are just normal examples without the die chip. note the progression on the N in next 2 pics Edited by robmck1967 02/19/2018 08:34 am

Large die chip? Ummm....more like HUGE die chunk, lol. And no, I have never seen it before. I found what I considered to be a large die chip on a US Arizona State Quarter a while back and now I'm thinking it's really not that large even though it partly obscures the designers initials! Great cherrypick!

thanks JDRMCB. I'm glad that I have 2 of them and now regret not grabbing the 3rd one the dealer had. I sent a link of this thread to Patrick Glassford so he can add it to his millennium quarter project if he wants.

That definitely blends in with the island at first look. Very cool!

There's also a nice sized plug underneath the top left serif of the N!

yes. if you look at the 2 different coins that have the chip, one has a light crack forming that becomes the chip on the tip of the N.

You're right, you've got a nice set showing die progression, and if they were found together it would seem as a very fast progression with likely catastrophic die failure not much longer after. That's always good for population control:)). Finding an earlier die state example would bring it full circle and truly tell it's story.

an update to this die chip (chunk!)...the gentleman I bought these from has approximately 200 of these.
the back story...he identifies himself to me as "Gino from the Bay downtown Vancouver" and he bought a case of these quarters and discovered the die chip in the case as he worked through several rolls. the one I have pictured he calls "type 3". he has 2 other types showing the progression of the chip into a chunk. he only has a few of those so you could assume that it progressed quickly from chip to chunk. he did not find any that progressed any further than the chip that formed on the 'N' so it is probable that the die was switched out at this point.
he was interested in me showing it on this site because he is not on the internet nor does he have an email address. He is curious if anyone else has found any of these so please check your stash and see if any more of these can be found in the wild. I did get a few more from him of the type 3 and he has promised me a type 1 and 2 at the next show in Vancouver (north shore numismatic society show).
SO CHECK YOUR 1999 AUGUST QUARTERS AND REPORT BACK WITH YOUR FINDINGS PLEASE!
you may discuss here or PM me if you prefer.

It's possible that's the full population!

I had a couple of this variety coin 15-18 years ago. At that time it was known as the "extra hay" variety. It is a huge die chip! Nice pick up.

Hi,
I recently found 3 of this coin into 2 Mint Rolls.
The version I got is the one with 3 die chips: the large chip over the C of Canada, on the N, and between the Horse's legs.
BTW, it seems that nobody in this thread pointed out the die chip between legs. See the last two pictures of the first post. You can clearly see the difference on the Horse's legs.
So, I suggest that it may exist a third variety with the large chunk over the C + the small chip on the "N" OR between the "Horse's legs". It would be surprising that these 2 new chips appeared in the same time.
So the progression would be:
1- Die chip over the "C" 2- Die chip over the "C" + die chip on the "N" OR "Legs" 3- Die chip over the "C" + "N" + "Legs"
Take a new look at your coins. It would be very interesting to find example of the version #2.
