Did anyone here follow this auction on ebay? Wish I still had the link. I never saw so many old US/Asian Trade dollars in one place. All in very good condition from the photos too. None showed the common "stiking test" that is common with these coins. Which is the only thing that scared me from bidding in the last moments. It seemed to good to be true. 1.5 Kilos of silver for a fraction of bullion value. In the end it sold for about $360 dollars with about $20 shipping from out of Canada. I figured the bullion value to be close to $600 dollars at current market price for silver. I hope that they where all authentic, and that someone here got them. The buyer was obviously a serious coin collector, judging from the past auctions that was won.

Yeah, the thing with Chinese fakes is that near the center of the coin, the details just disappear.
Look at the 2nd pic, bottom left. The 1 yen screeeeeeeaaaaaaaammmmsssss Chinese.

This is now the problem, they don't just come from China anymore.
The folder they are in even has Chinese on the cover, obviously purchased as a complete folder from China. And it says "World Coin Stock" This looks like a sample book of stock for one of the counterfeiters.

Canada has a pretty strong connection with China, they have a large immigrant population like the US. There have been "outbreaks" of counterfeits from there for years. Sad that someone got ripped off for $350 in this auction. I'd actually not mind having a set of these, they are pretty neat looking replicas and I think they'd make a nice wall display, especially if they were nickle or silver plated. Don't think I want to pay $350 though.

Although I didn't bid on this, I was tempted. Once again, thanks so much for this forum and family of collectors. I've learned yet another lesson. To be honest, I thought this may have been a legit auction. Now I feel bad for the winner. If the price stayed under $100 I might have made a bid....Thank goodness that this was posted during "hard times" for me. Or else, I might have been the newest sucker in the coin collecting world. I got lucky on this one. ebay is often evil-bay. I know this, and yet I can't help myself and look. I think I'll steer clear of any treasures and stick too graded and proved coins. I personally trust PCGS and the other major graders. I'll leave my chance finds to pawn shops and locals that need a quick buck. And I don't cheat those folks at all either. They know me, I know them, and I'm willing to pay fair prices for a coin. The only problem I have run into is that when someone that isn't into collecting looks up a potentially valuable coin that they might have, they assume the grade they have is higher that what it is............and they try to clean them....OH!! I beg them not too, but I see more cleaned coins than I should. In fact, if its something older than 50 years....more than half of what the locals are presenting to me are cleaned. I've told them over and over, don't clean your coins. Its as if, they think I'm trying to trick them into paying less for their coins. I've seen coins presented to me as "Mint" coins because they shine, and they don't have a spot of detail. Worn slick. VG 4 at best, and they will argue the shine is "Mint". The one that bother me most is the coins that are in fine or barely circulated condition that have been cleaned. I know they just cleaned them, a few hours before showing me. And I preach about how I'll pay more for a Black coin that a cleaned one. They don't seem to comprehend it. They clean it anyways. And then get mad if I don't offer "Mint Red Book value".

I'm no expert, but they all just look tooooo similar. Different countries, different years; and they all have the same toning. They look like fiftysixtuplets.
