There seems to be a lot of raised metal where the "US" is supposed to be at the center of the coin.

burfle23: I think that it's one of those coins that may stir an initial, visceral reaction when viewed. If this example falls into the Charlatan class of coins, is it of the period, or something much newer?

The rim shot does little to change my mind that it is a cast replica.

The blanks were prepared and upset in Birmingham (England); this doesn't look like the edge normally seen

I have a pointed rays/small US example in my collection (Crosby C-2b, Breen state II) for comparison but it is struck off center so it is hard to get a good "read" on the legends I will post it here for comparison. Do not have edge photos, but I'll check it when I get home. PCGS has a couple of very nice examples imaged as well (including an MS65!) I'm not qualified to have an opinion on whether or not the coin you posted is fake or real, but if it's real, it's badly damaged -- it reminds me a lot of saltwater damage, acidic soil, etc.
