Well, it finally happened. Went to our neighborhood Wells Fargo branch today and asked for customer penny rolls. Got 14 rolls, 12 of which were rolled by me. I could tell, because I mark my rolls (as a courtesy to follow hunters), which luckily saved me the trouble of going through them again. But still, it was kind of comical; both my wife and I had a laugh about it. I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. P.S. I used to dump all my pennies into the Coinstar machine, but it got too expensive, in the sense that there's only so much you can buy on Amazon with gift cards, especially since Amazon has been dropping the ball lately with delayed deliveries and such. Prime is definitely not what it used to be; I wonder if it's still worth the $139 a year. Cheers! Edited by AllSeasons 03/04/2023 5:23 pm

Good story. I've never come across my own discards, but I have come across cent rolls marked by what I assume to be a roll searcher. On every occasion those rolls were clearly dumped--no copper, just poor condition zinc coins.

what do you write on your discards? "Searched and dumped"?

@Dearborn Nah, just my initials. That usually indicates a searched roll.

I know what you are saying but what if some one used the coins you rolled and then used the wrapper to roll other coins.

@mcshilling I suppose it's possible, but for this instance, the pennies were dropped off at that branch a week ago, so I'm pretty sure they hadn't left the bank before I picked them up again. From a professional courtesy perspective, I can't really do anything about people reusing my wrappers, which may cause good rolls to be mistaken for searched rolls, unfortunately.

Yes good tip to mark your rolls to avoid accidentally re-searching them. Back when I was active in this effort, I used a dump bank several towns away from my source bank (actually in a different state, but this was in the northeast so the states are kinda tiny).

I usually draw a line with a black permanent marker from one end of the roll to the other end of the roll in case I get the same rolls again.

Your local Coinstars don't offer Cash? The Coinstars I use let's me pick payment options, one of which is a receipt to take to the Grocery Store or Bank or whatever establishments Service Desk for cash.

@NEWmrMatic They do offer cash, but there's a hefty fee, like 10 or 15 percent. The gift cards are fee free.

I order a box of half dollar from the bank.it's all machine wrapped and based on the enders seems from all different years. But when I open them, more than half of the coins has marker pen writings on the coin, and even one coin was engraved with letters of "CRH"! Of course I didn't see any silver in that whole box.

That happened to me once, and only once... but it was only a few rolls of nickels that somehow made it from one branch of a bank to another branch of that same bank six years later lol.
Best thing to do is have different banks for your buying and dumping... I tend to do my dumps in cities that are a little ways away from me - if I keep buying local, then the local banks need to keep ordering coins so I end up getting fresh new boxes to go through often.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!
