I think it is Die Deterioration and a zinc rot issue especially on the LIBE and the 8 of the date.

When dies wear there are issues they want to polish off of the dies, to rescue them and keep them working till retirement. The DDD is on the directions of the closest rims. (Dates to the right, Liberty to the left and Motto on the tops of the devices.) Also on DDD on the sinble squeeze dies, the polishing reduces the size of the dies when other die wear issue kick in. There are 4 stages of this:

On cents there is often the on the first stage, the devices affecting the fields:

After this is noticed, then the dies are polished.
Then stage 2 happens to the dies, with the developing of Ridge Ring:

On stage 3, note the tops of the devices are reduced, making them appear weaker.
1986-D-Cent-On-The-Obverse-Is-The-Date-And-Liberty-Doubled
On stage 4 the polishing gets to sever it starts to make the devices go away:
1986-D-Cent-On-The-Obverse-Is-The-Date-And-Liberty-Doubled
With later the fields developing a wave:
1986-D-Cent-On-The-Obverse-Is-The-Date-And-Liberty-Doubled
1986-D-Cent-On-The-Obverse-Is-The-Date-And-Liberty-Doubled
So this is normal and progressive on the dies as they age. Just like wrinkles on a senior, they have no premium. These are just die events. Not a die variety. On a die variety, these are created on the die from the first strike forward on the strikes. These are just die events.

Well we keep on trying. All there can share my images or link them to the CoopHome pages with my explinations. That is why they are there. If is my answer to a book that would probably not get read. But spoon feeding is a better way to learn. We didn't get taught every thing you learn in school in the first year, die we?

Thank you @Coop you always make a great post with excellent explanations. And some nice humour. Very nice school pics. Thanks for sharing!

Since this is an Error forum, the top photo has an Error. Gale's & Treva's names are not in the right order in the description at the bottom, they are reversed.
