Had this one a while now and think its Ionia, Miletus? Can find a similar reverse but not the obverse. Any pointers in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Measures 8 mm Weight is 0.73 *Just cleaned it a little and it might actually be silver, will get better pictures. Edited by MetDet71 03/05/2023 12:09 pm

Hard to tell what's on one side, lion head or human, deity head, to me it looks like forepart of lion like mine from Miletus, AR obol, reference SNG Kayhan 476 - 481.

Quote: it might actually be silver Yes, if silver then Miletos, lion/stellate pattern. If AE, then red flag territory.

Maybe just the photo but is that a bronze core showing through at 12 O'clock on the reverse or just dirt?...Yes the lion's head jumps out when you rotate it 30 degrees clockwise.

Quote: Yes the lion's head jumps out when you rotate it 30 degrees clockwise That's a good call Paul. Had a really good look through similar coins now and it does appear to be a lion, all be it worn! Quote: Yes, if silver then Miletos, lion/stellate pattern. If AE, then red flag territory It's definitely Silver, Cleaned it up properly now Bob. I have had this tiny coin for years now and never got around to looking at it properly. It came in a batch of coins from 'crusty old romans' when they were trading. Again, thank you for the help

It's incredible Paul, Never ceases to amaze. I have quite a few in the 8 to 10 mm range, most unidentified (obviously it's me lol). I will have to dig them out and have another go at them. This past couple of weeks, writing up and labelling the new purchases has really got the blood flowing again. Although I do sell a fair amount of coins, Mainly English silver or half silver, I really enjoy the chase of finding out what the next coin is going to be and even though I tray them up and don't look at them for months, every time I go back to look through them I identify another one or two. Without you guys I would have a lot of blank paper disks!

I'm new to this, so if not too silly to ask, what does Kamnaskires mean by red flag territory? Thank

Quote: what does Kamnaskires mean by red flag territory? Fair question. I believe that this variety of Miletos obol was produced exclusively in silver in antiquity. If MetDet71's coin had been bronze, it could have indicated a modern forgery. Many such forgeries (tourist copies) are produced in the wrong - often base - metal. Although there were also legitimately ancient imitations (counterfeits) of many silver coin types produced in base metals (sometimes plated in silver), I am unaware of any ancient bronze or fouree (plated) examples of the lion/stellate pattern Miletos obol. Thus, if this coin had been bronze, it would have been concerning since it might have suggested a modern copy.
