Went through an old jar of coins that were very lightly circulated from 1980 and went looking for the 1980 double date 5 cent. Some interesting finds on some of these coins. I looked back in the history of this site and the French site and not much on these new findings. I'm going to start with the Revere and then the Obverse. This might take a few days. Make sure to shine in on this topic with about 10 pictures to view.
First is a picture of the date, it sure looks like a small and large date. Note the bottom of the 9 how its broke and sideways.

Found 2 coins were the bottom of the 9 is like sheared off and sitting at a 90 degree and one broken off. The first set of pictures has the other one to compare.

Very interesting on the looks of the two different dates. It only took me 3 minutes of looking on ebay to find one of each listed there as well. Yet no mention on coinsandcanada.com

Theres more to this coin than you think. I also checked out ebay and sure there are some there but crappy pictures. I have more pictures coming. I like getting into the science of the strike, there are clues already in the pictures posted.

It looks like the 9 took a ding, and it shows well in the top photo, PMD. just looking at the 8's in the first two, to me just shows die wear. As the die wears, the digits and letters just get fatter. You can see by comparing the first 2 pics. Each coin struck was not meant to be a thing of beauty. It is a machine-driven stamping process like, as I've said many time before, just like nails, paper clips or bobby pins. There's always going to be minute differences when you churn out 10 or 100's of millions.

Okiecoiner you are %100 correct about late stage Die Deteriation. Here are some pictures of the Obverse and I have to say this is the best example for me to ever find. The mushy outline around the letters show it perfectly. As for the 9 in the date I think the die was starting to chip[break] and why I say that is I found 2 coins with the broken tail and 1 coin were it fell off. Enjoy these pictures.

Here are the rest of the pics of the Legend just to finish up. I don't think it would be a hard one to find. Enjoy!
