I got this half dollar a couple months ago as an upgrade and was looking at it under a hand lense for doubling and I think it is a 1948 D DDO-001. Worth sending in to PCGS for grading and Attribution? I did not take a full obverse and reverse picture but I did take a few pictures of a few of the devices corresponding to the Variety-Vista page: http://www.varietyvista.com/11%20Fr...8DDDR001.htm

It appears to be Machine Doubling and not a doubled die. Caused by the hammer die "bouncing" and plowing the normal design element aside to cause the shelf. Not a mint collectable mint error, not a doubled die, and common especially on larger diameter coins.

Thanks everyone!

I was just wondering because the doubling is so close to what is listed on the Variety Vista page linked above and I was also looking at doubledie.com on the page for 1948 D half dollars and it also lists very similar doubling that is shifted in the same direction.
