OK, I picked this one up because it just has a lot going on. LOL First, are there documented varieties for shields? The obverse. It has a wicked die crack on the left and the S is missing in Trust. To me I cant see any sign of it having been scraped off. And it would have had to have been precisely done. The date may be damage? but weird to have the 8 and 6 damaged, but not the 1 or other 6. The reverse also has a mostly missing S. The first one in States. And again, if thats damage, someone did a precise job of removing it.

There are a lot of 1866 w/rays nickel varieties, Ed Fletcher's book is probably the best guide to them in print, there is a site that has a CD-Rom variety database available and it does have a fair bit of information on them on the website alone. http://www.shieldnickels.net/Also Gloria and Cynthia's book that kbbpll posted above is a good reference. I met them at the first coin show I set up at after moving to California in the late 90's they were the first ones to come over and say hello, super sweet ladies! I bought their book and they signed it with a nice welcome message in it to me.

You'll be nice?
Be nice about what? You were already rude with asking what I paid for it. You already left that behind. How about not say anything at all unless its to the matter at hand. What a novel effing idea.

Yes there are documented varieties on Shield nickels, but there are a lot more varieties undocumented than documented. Te Shield nickel Viewer (SNV) listed on Shieldnickels.net is probably the most extensive listing. When you consider that die life in the early years was less than 15,000 pieces (It got up to around 25,000 by the end of the series) That would mean around 980 die pairs were needed in 1866.
