I goofed first time out, sorry everyone. Hi, greenhorn here, now that you've all had a chuckle. I have a question. I collected as a kid and just began to dabble again. In seeing all kinds of so called errors on State Quarters (some which I concider flaws, not errors) I stumbled across something while looking at lincoln pennies. I noticed on several pennies that the bowtie on abes left side appeared doubled, so I grabbed a bu coin to compare. The bu tie seemed squared off. The tie that I have looks as though it was meant to show two layers of the tie. Its appearance is "v'd" instead of squared. Without a pic does anyone understand what I am seeing?

I am guessing there is no way you can post a picture of the coin?

sorry, no pic as of yet, and no scanner. i'll try to explain a little differently. just below chin the tie almost resembles a tooth with roots. like when you go to the dentist. its forked on the bottom side. most coins I've viewed appear squared. I thought it could just have been filled or something. this really caught my eye. maybe it was just a fluke thing. thats why I thought i'd ask if anyone has seen or heard of such a thing.

yes very close, the doubling appears to be more prominent. is this an error?

did you click on that link to see if your coin had the same doubling that the coin he posted had? there are a few pictures of the same coin showing doubling in different places

Hi Greenhorn Can we begin with a bit more info ? What is the date of the coin your looking at ? The Lincoln Cent has seen many changes through the years,, the bow tie is but one of the places that has changed appearance, the earlier cents ,have a little different tie than what we see on the the coins today . whaa, you guys have opened a whole new door for me. I've been digging and tooling around the site. great site by the way and thanks to all for the support and welcoming. the date of the penny is 1989. hardly a hard to find type, but as I said I just stumbled across it and it caught my eye. I did go to the site Bobby mentioned, there doesn't seem to be any other dbl'ing on the coin. I am working on getting a pic to show you. in the future i'll save my coins aside until I can show you exactly whats going on with a pic. the input has been great, thanks again! I hope to be as helpful someday to another greenhorn.

If you are seeing the same "error" recurring on most of your coins, it's not an error - it's a normal part of the design. I have read your post half a dozen times and cannot get completely what you are saying. I would have to either see a coin or a good image to tell what you're referring to.

Although pictures are very helpful in assisting you, please don't feel that you shouldn't ask questions just because you can't post a picture. There are still some questions that can be answered without actually seeing the coin. If we need a pic, we'll let you know; but it never hurts to ask the question anyway.
