Despite The Royal Mint being Govt owned and whilst yes they are a business like any other they ask ridiculous prices for coins especially the pre-decimal themed coins all are VG-F and priced higher than UNC . I just hate to see folk taken advantage of under the guise of because they are an official out source of coinage surely they wouldn't rip folk off? Oh yes they would and not a 2nd thought would be given either. But momento and inherited coins even though you think your Mother might of overpaid are priceless because of the family ties. I was just making a suggestion for you going forward should you start to add other coins to the collection.

zookeeperz...you make some good points. I don't purchase much from the U.S. Mint because of their prices being over-inflated...IMHO Hopefully, Jess won't put all of his "eggs in one basket" by purchasing from The Royal Mint exclusively. He certainly had his reasons for acquiring what he did. I'm sure that he gets your point. Thanks for your input.

Modern Mint issued sets don't do well as an investment unless mintages are extremely low.

Are you a collector or an investor? I suppose you can be both, but what is your purpose for buying these?

I inherited several coins from my mom who passed away in 2021. I then decided to start organizing, studying and exploring the coins she left me. I learned to love coins and decided that I would now be a collector and hopefully, make good choices that if I decided to sell might give me a good return. I love the queen so I bought those from The Royal Mint in England thinking that they one day be in demand and perhaps worth a lot more.I also thought that since this was the first portrait of the King, this coin too may be worth something. So I guess by buying these, my thoughts were partly collector and partly investor. Interesting concepts to consider! Thanks for the food for thought! I intend to build on my collection, and I enjoy every minute of it. If I get good at it, I may even start selling and buying. That is my intention for now. So after reflecting, I guess I would want to be both a collector and investor. Therefore all your comments, questions, concerns and insights are VERY MUCH appreciated!

Hi again Jess! I've been re-reading our posts (and others). My only comment about reading those is that... I would like to suggest that you calm down a bit with your purchases. That was certainly an abundance of coins to purchase at the same time. If you wish for your hobby to have longevity and enjoyment, acquire coins a bit slower...like 1 or 2 at a time. As for your Mom's collection - have you reviewed or asked for grading from our CCF? I think that I would sit down with 1 coin at a time and do some research on what you have. It took me months to research and organize my Mom's collection and I continue to review them every so often. I hope this all makes sense to you. Also, I suggest that you keep records of each and every coin that you have (with photos) and review those records when you're in the market for more. Happy collecting!

Great advice Dsking! Much appreciated! I'll try to calm down on my spending, but really, I hadn't bought anything since I started studying and organizing my mom's coins.except last weekend:) I was in Chicago for the weekend and purchased 100$ US worth (about 138$ CAD) of bank rolls. I did a quick search, and returned 35$. So there goes another 65$ US. It's okay though! I'm having lots of fun! I will eventually get around to taking pictures and uploading them here on this awesome site for grading. Might take me a while, as I have many, many coins! I've started keeping a record and have several Excel spreadsheets, without pictures. I will eventually get around to photographing them also! Always a pleasure to hear from you dsking! Thank you!

Sounds like you're doing just fine in your searches and organizing your Moms collection. Oh, I do know that it takes time! Like I said, I spent months working on my Mom's coins and atleast a couple of years getting them all photographed! It was a huge endeavor as I'm sure yours is also. My Mom actively collected for around 70 years and I have atleast 50 on top of that. It's difficult for me to keep up sometimes. Right now I'm looking at about 2 dozen coins to photograph. Luckily my Hubby has them already in our inventory! Whew!
Continue to have fun Jess - it seems that you are! My Hubby is originally from Chicago. They have some really cool coin shows there! By the way - I'm "Debbie". You can use it on here if you wish! "Deb" if you like.

Thanks Debbie! I'm Jessie. My husband really doesn't care about coin:( wish he did so he could help me a bit! WOW!!! You have even more than I do! Congratulations! My mom collected both CAD coins and US coins. She never organized or researched like I do. So as you'd understand, I had my work cut out for me. My sister lives in Florida for the past 40 years and hoarded lots of US coins. She gave them all to me as well! So again, lots of work, but I'm just fascinated, so I don't mind! Chicago is a gorgeous city! I love it! Such a pleasure talking to you Debbie! Would love to hear more about your collection, if you have a few minutes!
