Hello Everyone,

I've recently inherited this coin from my grandfather who unfortunately passed away. I'd like some information on this coin, if its legitimate, what value it may have, etc. Any information is appreciated as I couldn't find any coins referencing the Salk Vaccine that look similar to mine after about 30 minutes or so of searching the web.

Here is the front and back of the coin:
Salk-Vaccine-Conquers-Polio-Silver-Coin-1955
Salk-Vaccine-Conquers-Polio-Silver-Coin-1955

If the coin is difficult to read, here is the text on the front and back of it:

Front Top - "SALK VACCINE CONQUERS POLIO"
Front Bottom - "1955"

Back - "WITH THE DISCOVERY OF A VIRUS VACCINE, DR. JONAS SALK WAS ABLE TO IMMUNIZE THE PUBLIC AGAINST POLIO, THE DREADED DISEASE WHICH FOR DECADES HAD CRIPPLED AND KILLED THOUSAND OF CHILDREN AND ADULTS. 1955"

Once again any and all information about this coin is greatly appreciated. I'd love to know more about it but I can't seem to find any information about it online.

Thanks

Hello and welcome.

As noted above, it is not a "coin", it is a "medal".

At a minimum, it will be worth its silver content - if it really is solid sterling silver, then that's just over an ounce of silver, by my reckoning. If you just take it to a coin dealer, that will be all they would offer you for it.

"Medical medals" have a small but passionate collector base; it will probably be worth more than just the silver content to such a collector, but actually obtaining that value will depend on a medical medal collector finding your sale.
