Agreed - it's the Ring of Death from a coin wrapping crimp machine. Common and you'll see it a lot when you start searching lots of change.

Post mint damage with one right twist and a second left twist. Not sure what vending machines take cents these days, but a wrapping machine or a person's experiment makes sense. IMO
