Very cool. To me, that obverse 'texture' looks like a uniform, potentially emergent lamination issue. I have a few wheat cents--somewhat similar--which have several closely-spaced, parallel lamination seams. One can 'feel' the texture when running the corner of a business card 90 degrees across the pattern.

Gotta love wheat cents.
