Here is a 2.70 gram 1943 steel and a 3 gram 1943 steel. The 3 gram has a shiny finish and the design has more depth. Any ideas what's going on here.

2.7 grams +/- .13 grams mint tolerance is normal. The heaver one looks to be plated after it left the U.S. mint making it known as a re-procced coin.

Yes, the coin on the right looks to be plated. I've come across several dozen of these over the decades.

Just check the edge, if it is shiny like the rest of the coin, then it has been plated.

Agreed it's reprocessed.

But also understand that the standard weight of a coin is subject to two conditions.

1. There is always a tolerance ... as mentioned it's +/- 0.13g so the "standard" would be 2.37 to 2.63 grams.

2. There is always an accuracy factor, typically 95%. Only 95% of a sample need to be within tolerance for the entire batch to still be acceptable. 2.5% could be less than 2.37g and 2.5% could be over 2.63g.

3. This is applied differently for precious metal coins. The 95% is 0% below and 5% above so you always have at least the stated amount.
