I've had it with ebay for a while now. Exorbitant shipping costs just about did it for me. Then the GST/PST addition was the final straw that killed the goose. Especially when it's charged on everything, including .9999 silver.

All of these factors are not the fault of ebay but rather of government policy. So blame the government, not ebay.

Another only ebay buyer. I figure shipping and tax into what my max bid will be for an item.

Sellers have a great deal to say about shipping. Some offer free shipping (gasp!), some offer way-over-the top shipping (gasp!). Before ebay is thrown completely under the bus regards shipping, let's consider the role played by sellers. And no, I'm not an ebay shill.

I think a lot of complaints about ebay shipping from Canadians relate to the ebay Global Shipping Program.

The ebay Global Shipping program is terrible for Canadians. The program charges duties and I think a duty collection charge as well, where no duties are generally paid if the item is shipped via normal mail. So I routinely see $5 or $10 coins sold under this program with say a $20 shipping charge. So I pass on a lot of coins I would like to buy.

The seller is oblivious to all this because I don't think they even see the shipping charge paid by the buyer. So this particular aspect of high shipping cost is 100% a problem with ebay.

ebay buyer here.

Interestingly enough I actually like the GSP if I buy from the US. I am typically buying more expensive coins and they charge a low flat rate duty that is considerably less than I've been charged by customs when it goes across the border some other way. A normal package shipped USPS to Canada ends up with a bunch of extra charges on it by the time it gets here, including often too much duty for where it's landing. I wouldn't think this way about a low value coin but if you have a $500+ coin coming at you the GSP works pretty well.

Re: taxes on ebay purchases, I find myself pretty annoyed by this too. It is a bit hit and miss when buying from the US I find, but all Canadian purchases seem to have taxes now. They also do this wrong for BC and charge 12%, which annoys me even more. Should only be 5% coming from another jurisdiction. It's turned me off of ebay now unless it is a price low enough that it's still worth it even paying the taxes. That means the sellers ultimately pay the price I think.

I've never sold anything on ebay so I have no idea how good or bad that is.

Being I requested ebay to shut down my account they gave me a questionnaire to fill out. I did the longest version of it and expressed my views to them and represented all of you here saying the same thing. Also told them they will still make millions at 5% instead of Billions at 12% commission. Funny I never heard back!!

Levaril, I sold something into BC the other day and I noticed tax was only 5%. I don't understand why BC is 5% when all other provices seem to pay the full tax load. Is BC not part of the HST?

@Smallcentguy no we don't have HST here. 7% PST and 5% GST and for coins we only get charged GST if it is coming from other provinces. Weirdly if I get something from a BC seller though it is 12%. I honestly don't know why that is the case, but it keeps me from buying from anyone in BC. I consistently pay 5% though if it comes from any other province. Alberta is 5% as well, which is nice.

Tax is tax, it"s Canada, try buying cool stuff from Heritage or Stacks add like 70% to bidding price to bring home to Canada. You just have to pay for eyeballs, for common stuff just go to local shows buy at great discounts

As a buyer only, I've moved away from ebay too. All the raw coins in my interests are garbage, the images are mostly garbage, there's never any true auctions on the coins I want, the certified coins are mostly BIN and way overpriced, and the last Make Offer I did I never got a response and the offer expired. I see the same coins up for months. It's like they don't really want to sell anything. I've gone to GC and HA for everything these days, and factor BP into my max bids.

Right on! I just closed my ebay account after nearly two decades for these very reasons. My patience finally wore through.

I empathize with sellers who have to deal with the ebay platform, but the inability or unwillingness to provide a good image (of both sides !!!) of a coin for sale is the straw that finally broke the camel's back for me.

I returned at least a third of the coins purchased on ebay over the years due to poor photos, including a fair number of certified pieces. Certification does not guarantee quality, and it seems a lot of sellers do not acknowledge this reality.

Hi
2 points here
..Out of province sellers only (should) charge PST if they are registered with your provincial tax department (to operate and sell within the province) ;if they are out of province and the ale is online (as I understand it it is a deemed sale in the seller's province .... and out of province sales are exempt from local tax
...As to Small cents guy ....I feel his points are right on point; paying up to 100% of the item cost (or more) cuts a wide swath items out of the range of possible purchases. Buying high price items as Levaril suggests puts one in a small percentile of sellers and items and precludes any but the most reputable sellers {and you'd likely be better off examining their on line store calling them an negotiating }, which excludes almost all private sellers
