This one is about the same size as a quarter, but weighs 3.5 grams. Looks like silvered brass and had been mounted. Any info is appreciated! =) Edited by Sap 04/09/2009 11:03 am

I think one side reads "pray for us, virgin full of grace" The only word I can read on the other side is "chapel", and I suspect the location is covered by the clasp. Since it's Catholic, I would suspect S.Germany or Austria.

Right, the location is "hidden". When I saw the piece, I first thought of Altötting (Bavaria): http://www.erzbistum-muenchen.de/ar...01810801.jpg(The Chapel is the building in the foreground/right.) http://www.erzbistum-muenchen.de/ar...01811001.jpg(That is the Altötting Madonna. But there's similar ones in several other places.) Also, the text says DIE (GNA)DENˇKAPELLE ZU (...)NLT - the GNA part I could guess, but not the place name. This NLT or maybe NET does not really match "Altötting", I fear ... Christian

Austria or Southern Germany? Hehe, try Belgium instead. This place is about where BE, DE and NL "meet": So the text most probably says DIE (GNA)DENˇKAPELLE ZU (MORE)SNET ... Christian

Thanks Chris! That's a great info find. So the town is Moresnet, Belgium, and the chapel is called the Gnadenkappele? Thanks.

Christian, great research there on finding the chapel. Something about the structure didn't appear to be Bavarian or Austrian, so it makes perfect sense now.

The place is called Moresnet-Chapelle; it is part of the town of Plombičres. The Gnadenkapelle (Chapel of Mercy) is still a destination for pilgrims, e.g. from nearby Aachen (DE). Plombičres is officially part of the French community in Belgium, but many people there also speak German. The madonna is a fairly small (24 cm) statue from around 1750.

Wow, excellent. Thank you again. I guess the token probably dates from the late 19th century or thereabouts?

As for how old the token or medallion is ... I knew a question would come along that I would have to answer "I have no clue". Don't live very far from the place, and the area sure has an interesting history (especially nearby "Neutral Moresnet"). But I have not been to that chapel and the calvary yet. And the age of this piece - 19c sounds about right. Just a guess though. Christian
