Can anyone tell me if these coins actually circulate/circulated or were they just for collectors?
Thanks.

Last time I was in Belize, I saw a few of the smaller dollar coins...but nothing more pictorial or collectible. Anything over $1 I used was a note. But I didn't exactly look around for the nice coins in Belize city.

Were they the dollar coins with the queen on or the one with a bird on?
There was a series of coins released between 1974 and 1985 with the Belize coat of arms on one side and different birds on the other. They were minted by the Franklin mint. I am trying to find out if they ever circulated in Belize?

All the coins I saw had the queen and a rather old style. I looked at Krause and see those bird coins. I have never seen them in Belize personally. Most which circulates is in really bad shape: corroded coins and dirty, old money. Must be the tropical heat/humidity.

Ok, Thanks for the info. I suspect they are collector coins and not for circulation.

I'm not sure if there were any coins ever issued by the Franklin Mint that were intended for circulation. I don't think they were set up to make circulation quantities.

Is there some general rule to Franklin Mint foreign coins?
For example, I see these coins and values. Would they be worth less if minted at Franklin Mint?
Panama 500 Balboa Gold BU $1,500.00 Panama 500 Balboa Gold Proof $1,175.00
Are Franklin Mint foreign coins minted for the contracted country, or simply as a replica intended for collection?

Though most Franklin mint coins were intended for collectors only, some definitely did circulate. I've got a bunch of 1 cent coins from Bahamas from the early 70s that circulated. I also have a 1974 FM 1 Cent coin from Belize in F condition. I'm guessing it circulated. Now, I don't want to be smug, but I knew a coin question that Sap didn't know, what's my prize?

Was in Belize last week. Our tour guide stated that since Belize is independent they still choose to put the younger profile of Elizabeth on their coins. The only dollar coin I saw was the one with the ship on back and Elizabeth on front. I brought back 50c, 25c, 10c, 5c, and 1c coins. Nothing too interesting visually. As to the previous post, you wouldn't find much around Belize City in looking for coins. Did by a nice license plate for the garage though. Another hobby kind of.

Quote: As to the previous post, you wouldn't find much around Belize City in looking for coins. Yep, only at the central bank...which looked formidable; I didn't dare visit. Btw, did you happen to cross the "swing bridge"? A movie was shot there starring Walken and Berenger-- Dogs of War. I spent most of my time of the Cayes, and I didn't explore Belize C. much.

We were unfortunately on a cruise so only got to spend limited time there. Would like to go back and fish and do a nature hike or two and see Xunantunich (sp?). Saw Altun Ha. I just love Mayan ruins. too bad they didn't have coins like the Greeks, Romans and Medeival Europe during the same time period. Overall the coins aren't too interesting. The $2 bill has three major ruins on the back so I got one of those as well.
