As you can see, yours is the large date. Keep/ study this chart for your future reference.

Thank you for your reply. I have study that chart and I still sometimes have a hard time telling the difference in my coins. Again, thank you for your time. I'm still pretty new at this, but with time I am sure I will eventually get a better idea. I'm not giving up yet, I realize there is a lot still to learn.

merclover posted a great comparison picture. Also look at the 8s. The small date's 8 looks more like a snowman with a smaller head than on the large date. Also, being a former teacher, I know some people learn a lot better with some sort of goofy or novel comparison. So here is one for these:

Earle42's chart is excellent too! Thanks for posting it, Earle!

The key area in telling the two sizes apart is the curve or back side of the 2 and the size of the 8's. Compile several '82's and use the chart. it'll come, you'll see. Buy a small digital scale too, as you'll want to weigh all your '82's to look for a small date copper ( 3.11 g. on your scale). There are only a few known examples, but if you find one it could mean big bucks! Read more about them using the search box atop every page on the upper left side here on CCF. It's fun to dream about finding one! Bonne chance!

Personally I still find the easiest way is to look at the distance from the tip of the 2 to the rim.
If another number would fit in the space, it is a small date, if not it is a large date.
This way even if the numbers are damaged, you can still tell the difference.
