He declared himself emperor days after Caracalla being stabbed to death by a Roman soldier. He was the first emperor to come from an equestrian background. It is believed he was accepted by the senate due to the fact they disliked the often erratic Caracalla, and Macrinus having the loyalty of the army at the time. Not a strictly realistic portrait, but in comparison to the usual treatment on denarii...truly remarkable! Certainly the nuances show a distinct lean into realism.
