Hello everyone this is my very first post and feel very fortunate to be a part of this community. So let me dive right in. Today I went to my local Walmart and through self check out I got back in change this dime that at first glance thought it was a penny. I brought it home thinking it was just dirty or something and I got some toilet paper with some rubbing compound and all it did was get brighter and skinnier. Can any explain to me on how or what may have caused this. Any help would be greatly appreciated and would like to thank you in advance

You didn't stump anybody, you just posted 41/2 hrs ago
and some of us are just getting up and others will still be in bed.
The answer to your question is that it is just toning, nothing unusual.

Agree--toning derived from environmental exposure. I've seen a good number of these over decades of coin searching. And yes, I just got up 45 minutes ago. Still dark where I am.

First welcome to CCF. Second, from this description, it sounds like you have been cleaning your coins. This is something that we overwhelming advise against as you are much more likely to reduce the numismatic value rather than enhance it. Best is to take things a bit slower while you are still learning.

I agree on several levels here:
This is natural toning of the coin, (they can all tone out differently depending on what environment they were exposed to.
and
Never, never, never, polish your coins like you mentioned - all you will end up with is a worthless (face value) very shiny coin. Unless you are planning on making a belt buckle.
Polishing a coin removes the original mint luster.

Thank you all for your expertise in answering my dumb question I do apologize for my lack of taste and respect I didn't mean it in a malicious way however after reading it to myself I can understand the replies received my sincere apologies. Oh and BTW I was only cleaning this one dime making sure it wasn't dipped in paint or anything there of. Thank you all again for your educating input. Just a foot note though the cooper coler doesn't look like it's under the nickle it looks obviously that it's above it and does not look like wear and tear

I mean in person I know it's hard to tell from the pic if the copper is above or beneath. I'm starting to think it can be paint thanks again
