Together with the surface damage, this looks to me like a coin that's been buried in acidic soil for a while, then dug up and returned to circulation.

Just some sort of corrosion, look at the surface.

Yes, to be sure the surface is pitted, at least on the obverse left side. I wonder if this could be PMD while the copper visible on surface is NOT a result of wear or PMD, but rather mint error. Consider:
1. quarters which are much older and much more worn (to the extent that all text is illegible) don't even show this much copper on surface
2. on reverse the surface over "AMERICA" is copper tone, AND the edge of the coin closest to it is full copper, NOT a typical "sandwich" of copper-nickel/zinc

This coin could have been exposed to an acidic environment and was etched down to the copper core, or it was just drizzled with an acid to get the same effects

Unable to fully evaluate since your photos are distorted because they are more than 10x larger in area than the 800x800 pixels the board recommends. A size of 800x800 works with more equipment and allows more members to participate.

Wrong allegations..
1. The coin do not show Cu color.
2. "sandwich" is not a numismatic term. We say Clad
3. This coin has the environmental ferric oxides.

Hope will help you in the future to made distinction between Cu aging colors spectrum and environmental oxide.
