We found this Mexican coin today: 8 RD 1834 RM 10 D 20 G. It is silver. Larger than a US silver dollar. States "Republica Mexicana". I have seen several on listings with "Z", but no "R". I assume this is the mint location. Does anyone have any info as to what type of coin this is, where minted, etc? Is there a site with old Mexican coins and basic info about the coins?

Thanks for any help.

I thought all of these coins were minted in Mexico City...

I don't know a lot about these coins, but you'll get an answer soon. It's late and the experts have gone to bed...

you have a Mexican 8 reales, minted in Durango, Mexico. Can't tell if it is real from the picture, you need to weigh it and get Swamperbob to give it his blessing, but 1834 is a scarce date for that mint and has overdate varieties so check it carefully.
WD1040, there were 14 mints in Mexico that produced these coins. Collecing a nice example from all the mints makes a nice collection.
You have a wonderful coin that traded in the USA as legal tender until 1857, nice addition to anyone's collection.

Thanks for the answers I have received so far. I'm sure this coin is real, I just don't know much about it. And not being a true collector, I don't really know how to go about checking out what a coin is if there is not ready info online about it. We found this coin on the back of our property with a metal detector. There used to be a trade route thru here and an indian village at one time. We have found various old US coins from the 1700 and 1800s as well as old British coins and pieces of 8. Being a true novice at all of this, what do you mean by "overdate varieties"?

If you look at the date very carefully under magnification, can you see the top of a 3 and the bottom of a 3 under the 4 in the date? That date has a known overdate. Nice find. Please post pictures of the "pieces of 8" you found, I would love to see them.

I don't see a "3" behind the 4 (or above or below), or a part of a 3 above or below. There is a picture with the original posting above, but here it is again. Thanks for your answer!

Do you have any idea how many would have been minted, or any other info about it?

"8R" is the denomination, 8 reales. The nickname for the 8 reales coin, "peso" became the official name in 1870.

"Do" indicates the Durango mint. This mint operated from 1825 to 1895.

"R.M." are the initials of Ramon Mascarenas, mint assayer between 1830 and 1848.

"10 Ds. 20 Gs." refers to the purity of the silver and equals .903 fine. For comparison, sterling is .925 and pre-1965 U.S. silver coins are .900 fine.

There was no record kept of the number of 8 reales coins minted in Durango in 1834. The mint records only give the total value of silver coined that year.

The official weight of your coin is 27.07 grams, giving it an actual silver weight of 0.786 ounces.
