Brazenly Polished Australian Pennies

OzLeigh Valued Member Australia 215 Posts	Posted 04/15/2023 01:15 am Embarrassed as I am to admit it, I recently rediscovered these pennies I bought when I was a newbie 10 or so years ago. Judging by the stickers they all came from the same source. Should they be destroyed so that they never fool any other new collectors dazzled by shiny things? Report this Post to the Staff

David Graham Pillar of the Community Australia 1590 Posts	Posted 04/15/2023 01:52 am Ha ha.. Been there, done that. In fact just the other day a seller on ebay had some coins that looked polished. I contacted him and asked if they had been polished. His response - "Don't know. I bought them like that." Odd thing is, he had a penny that was listed as polished. I guess he must have polished that one himself if he doesn't know how to pick a polished coin. Re the polished pennies - pass them on as a bulk lot of cheap coins. To save you the pain of a second lesson, I'd like to recommend to you that you flatten the staples on all of your 2x2s. If you keep the staples in the as-formed shape with the loops on the back (as I did early in my collecting career), these can rub against adjoining coins in your collection and scratch them. I finally got around to sorting a bunch of coins I purchased almost a year ago which included a pile of 1919, 1920 and 1933 pennies. I did notice that several had been polished. I struck out on all of them except a 1919 Melbourne dot above bottom scroll variety which I didn't have. Fortunately I had none of any great value. One of them I carried in my pocket for years and played with it and it toned over nicely and went brown again. Looks good now. Report this Post to the Staff
