Visiting Athens, Greece in a few months. Any recommendations for coin shops in the city? Thanks.

As I understand it,
if you buy genuine ancient Greek coins and export them out of Greece without an official permit, you are breaking Greek Law.
Dealers should know this.
Quite OK to buy very deceiving fakes, but the authorities may require you to prove that they are fake.

If you are buying coins that are not covered by Greek heritage laws you should not run foul of Greek Law.

I did a Google search:
coin shops in Athens , and found three coin shops.

May be opportune to say there are no intra-EU road customs checks.

So that's how the clandestine export of genuine coins out Greece is done !
porous borders.
Every country has them, in some form or other.

Thanks for the feedback. I did some additional research - sounds like the Monastiraki Flea Market might be a great option in Athens. Will check it out and report back with photos.

Don't wear an "I love Athens" shirt in Istanbul.

Don't wear an "I love Istanbul" shirt in Athens (exception if it says "I love Constantinople").

Do enjoy your trip. Two fascinating, extremely historical cities.

How hard do officials actually search at the airport for such "cultural patrimony"?

Following up on my initial post. I was unable to find an authentic coin shop in either Istanbul or Athens.

I did find one shop in Istanbul that had a few coins, priced at a point where the seller apparently wants to keep them forever.

The Monastiraki Flea Market in Athens was a bust - only some modern Greek coins pre-packaged for tourists, also very overpriced.

It seems that Greek coin shops are obeying Greek Law, when it comes to heritage items.

The Turkish State Mint in Istanbul sells Turkish commemoratives and other coins.
