My consolation coin, for not taking the 1899. This too I hope may be MS64 or perhaps better, when I look at some photos online. It is a guess but I think all nice photos online are taken with light from above. That is less harsh on contact marks. While photographing today I decided to show it. It illustrates my points the other day about the direction of light, playing with the bag marks and scratches. First photo has light coming from the left side. Second photo has light coming from the side above. See the broken die mark at 10h. It is a very very slight line in surface. So it is visible only in the photo where light hits perpendicular to it. It continues along the stars, tuns and ends above the date. As it turns it disappears in the photo. Light coming from above shows the bag marks in the hair that were in the shadow in the other photo. It also highlights the small horizontal bag marks in the cheek. The vertical mark in the cheek that caught the light from the side, it is shallow enough that it barely shows with light from any other angle. Edited by jecz79 04/23/2023 2:18 pm

Yes, it does appear to be a die crack around the stars starting at K8 to K10.5

Thanks. I should ask for opinions on possible grade, to think if it is worth getting one. Here is a picture taken from the side, to better show the surface. The fields seem nice to me. I think I should have placed this in the subforum about grading. Is is impossible to move?

Thank you Cojnfrog. If it not against the rules to create a new topic, I will try asking also in the section about grading.

Looks like a great example, with excellent luster, smooth fields, and only a few marks. Solid for MS64 I think and it takes a big jump in value from 63 to 64. I'd try my luck at PCGS.
Regardless of grade, having this coin in a slab will help protect the surfaces.

That is good news, I had hoped this was one of those worth saving.
I keep my mint condition coins in plastic capsules with a moisture barrier. I see what you mean Jaobler. I am hoping to also preserve the luster from oxidation. I guess this coin has spent its whole existence in bank vaults. Until this year.
The nice eagles I see I attempt to save. Here in Europe they risk being sent to the foundry when finally sold. They are very nice coins! But I cannot afford to do the whole collection by date. And already have a nice 1904 one of this type to keep. Than you all. I think I should have this graded. And then see how it can make its way to a collector back in the home continent.
