Any ideas on what the indents are on the reverse of this 1943 steel penny, they are clearly surrounded by good areas which means to me that the error cannot be caused by a human. If so, I would think this person has crazy skills. What do you think?

Well the fact that there is a border of raised, "smushed" metal means that this cannot have been done during the striking process. Is this coin slightly underweight?

I cannot get to the coin it right this moment, so I will have to weight it tomorrow and post. I almost waited to post this coin anyway until I weighed it because I thought someone might ask. My bad.

This one is interesting. Both, the wheat ears, and the letters were not affected at all from whatever is going on. I'll be curious to see what the Verdi t is on it.

@jdo, since best practice is to start only one thread per coin, I have merged your two threads together.

Thank you for merging. I just sent a question on that to Dearborn. I think I will have to learn how to merge those correctly. Do I just go to original post and reply to it myself or is there a different way? Thank you for your help

Good morning everyone, I am still reading and learning how to do things on the forum so I may have miss placed this topic, but I am still waiting for any expertise concerning my 1943 steel penny. I originally posted and then re-posted with close-ups and the weight of the coin. Deerborn and Spence requested that I post the weight of the coin to assist them in diagnosis. Anyway, please let me know what you all think. Thank you. Jdoe

Could that be the zinc layer peeling off (or corroding off) of the steel?
