Excellent, Nells - an interesting piece! Hokiefan, I was surprised to learn that people have to pay to watch regular TV when I visited the UK about 20 years ago. In fact, that is still the case today. Don't know if these licenses are still used.

Quote: An interesting variety of stuff! That TV broadcast receiving license made me smile; I remember having to get an annual license when living in the UK about 20 years ago. Same here, when I lived in Wales (UK) in a small town of Haverfordwest, I had to get one of them too. (for color TV) the black and white TV license was cheaper. The UK even had TV Vans that drove around neighborhoods that could detect who was receiving the TV signals, then check if that house had the license or not. (if not they got a fine)

(if not they got a fine) When I first moved to Aberdeen, I was just going to ignore the TV license letter I received. I remember thinking, "How would they know?". But I then found out from my friends about the mobile detection units, so I quickly mailed them the payment. However, I think all I got was a paper receipt. I'm sure I've got one around somewhere so I'll have to check.

Mobile detection units? Geesh!
Isn't it also odd to have to pay for TV as way back when you basically had just the BBC, which is/was to some degree or another a government agency? Wouldn't that mean a double tax?

Nells250 -
I'm from Boston and usually go to the Bay State Coin Show out in Marlborough. Never been to the show in Devens. Is it a busy place? How many tables you think?
Bay State usually has over 100 tables and lots of customers to match. But would check out Devens if its worth the trip!

I used to go once in a while to the Devens Coin Show, but not anymore. It is too small for me and not many world coins there. I do plan to go to the Bay State Coin Show out in Marlborough at the end of this month.

NumisEd - Thanks for the reply about Devens. I like world silver but a lot of shows now lean heavily on bullion and slabbed US coins. That's where the money is, but not what I collect. I'll see you at Bay State. Not sure whether Friday or Saturday, but I'll be there. Just look for the old guy running around like a kid in a candy store. That's me. PS: back to this thread... I also like ephemera and make the occasional impulse buy of old maps and the like!

RE: Devens There are foreign coins if you like to rummage through discount bins ;-) I think you need to get there early before vendors leave, too. BUT again, I am no seasoned pro when it comes to coin shows.
