I was looking through OfferUp for any interesting coins or coin collections for sale. I came across a posting for a slabbed 2021 $50 Gold Eagle selling for $1,750. I didn't recognise the label so I did a Google image search. Turns out that the slabbed coin is sold on Alibaba for 99 cents.

I contacted the seller and politely informed him about the coin. The seller told me that it was his grandpa's, and thanked me for letting me know. The posting was not removed, but the seller did update the listing.

Was it OK for me to let the seller know about the coin? Do others on this forum do the same thing when they come across an obvious fake, or flag/report on ebay?

Here's a link to the OfferUp posting:

We try to avoid these Chinese websites as much as possible. For every item that gets complained about others just fill in the void. It is like a game of Whack-A-Mole.

The vast majority of people selling "obvious fakes" on ebay etc know perfectly well that their "coins" are fake. They will usually just ignore anyone who politely informs them of the truth.

It's OK to let them know, but it's mostly a waste of time. They'll either not respond, deny that it's fake (angrily in many cases), or make up a story about grandpa. I've had a small handful on ebay who thanked me and removed the coin, but it's rare.

Yep, waste of time. The seller messaged me last night through OfferUp and told me he would take the posting down. 14 hours later and it's still up. I hope no one buys the thing.

It looks like someone just bought that fake coin for $1000. I did flag the post as a fake.. The seller has now put up another fake coin in OffeUp. I am disappointed OfferUp did not take down the post or ban the seller.
