If you guys remember the "spite" episode from Seinfeld, this might be funny:
I go to Chase and ask for a box of pennies. The teller-girl says they do have a box and then asks me if I collect coins etc. I say yes, and also to pass the time.
Then all of a sudden she says, "Well we don't really give it out unless it's for business." I tell her, "Ok, business then," (dumb I know, but she annoyed me).
"But you already said coin collecting." Man I lol'd so hard when I heard that: "It's for both, how about that."
Her manager, who was at a desk right behind her and told her they had the box, and had gone in the room to get it + was clearly cool with it --- was told when they were in the room and she came out to say they give it for business and that I couldn't come back there with loose change (as if I'm gonna come back with 2500 pennies in a box or something lol?). The teller says how it costs them money to order it.
I say I won't come back there with any change - Coinstar. And they give me the box.
Here are my thoughts:
-The annoying teller is way too concerned about a major bank branch's expense for a box of pennies as if she's the manager (hate people like that). The previous times another teller that I think was a manager who seemed to have anxiety from coin collectors had no problem giving me a box of pennies. No detective work attempted.
-Big banks like this make way more off our money in interest that they can afford this - it's not like I go there every day for a box of pennies.
-The fact that she thinks she's so slick is what really annoyed me. The way she got me was that she seemed to be going ahead with the box of pennies when she asked me, which threw me off....I don't think she's that smart but maybe I'm that gullible. ended up telling her she should be a police officer for taking her job of finding the truth so seriously as if it's life or death.
At the end of the whole thing, no joke, I even told them, "Geez, you'd think I'm robbing the bank or something lol"
Who even gets pennies....for them to be so cringe about this? If it was an actual issue they would've restricted it to business accounts only, which they clearly didn't.
I'm not gonna ask them for boxes of pennies as literally only one other place has been so retentive about it. I would've asked for single rolls if they couldn't, or just to get me a $20 (came in with 2 rolls of a quarters and a $5), but I mean........didn't think Detective Teller-Girl was on the case.
Lesson to be Learned - Don't answer questions to bank tellers you don't trust.
Not sure how to get revenge by making them my dump bank, any ideas? They have annoyed me a few times, but this time I'm taking it personally. Edited by Allyates 04/25/2023 01:49 am

I can relate. I ended up closing my account at banner bank due to the exact types of issues. I found a bank that exercises customer service. I had a talk with the manager of the bank before I opened an account and let her know that I would be buying coins and that I wanted them to order them for me and that it was a condition of my opening an account. They have been great, never any problems at all: Peoples Bank. Also I recently was offered bags of loose change brought in by customers. This helps them out because they dont have to order for you and they dont have to send the coins off to loomis if you buy them. Try that technique.

ah thanks for the advice. I'll ask about bags of loose change. and glad that you have a bank you're happy with. I have trouble ordering even a box of quarters.
It cannot be myriads of coin collectors cuz I've never seen anyone but me get/bring boxes.
Curious, what do you look through? I've done pennies, but I mainly hunt quarters for proofs and W's. I tried halves a few weeks ago, but it feels like there's less chance of a find with them.

I've been actively roll searching across several decades--perhaps 98%+ of material obtained at several banks/branches. I've never had an issue with a teller. Yes, some have been more cheerful than others, but I've never come close to 'crossing the line' with them. I understand that fees are involved when branches order rolls/boxes, and that high-volume/industrial-grade collectors demanding multiple boxes can put a strain on the branch. I've witnessed barely civil confrontations in the past--many times. When requesting rolls and the occasional box, I always strive to make it a pleasant experience for bank/branch workers. I accept what they provide--plenty, or not so plenty--with a smile. I also try to establish positive relationships over time with tellers and managers--has paid off very well over the years. Bottom line is, I try to project a positive/respectful image of coin collectors.
I'm only reflecting on this through my own experience--doesn't necessarily match the experience of others.

Thanks for the welcome guys! Banks are definitely one of the most respectful places I've been at - both by the tellers and customers. This girl was nice, despite taking the job CIA-level seriously. She's new, which would explain this somewhat, but her manager was clearly cool with it until she mentioned I'm CRH-ing. Nonetheless, I also try to leave a positive image - my dumps are always rolled ofc, and there's one location that's absolutely terrific and I've brought them Oreos. if they tell me "we only give boxes to business accounts," no prob. If they bust a double agent on me, I start to daydream about giving them tons of loose change for them to count+roll

I used to change/add banks like a pair of dirty socks when I was CRH'ing, with up to six different accounts at any one time. I searched between $125k-$150k in five years. The banks were mostly respectful, the main reason I'd change a bank was usually because they kept upping fees (never paid a fee to order), account maintenance fees, minimum deposit fees, fees for this/that.

Alternate view...
Banks are for-profit organizations.
Ordering coins costs them money.
Sending back coins to be counted and re-rolled costs them money.
Having excess coins on-hand means the bank forgoes income from lending out the money tied up in the boxes of coins.
The branch's profitability ultimately determines whether it stays open or is closed in the next round of austerity.
Why shouldn't EVERY member of the team be concerned about the long-term success of their livelihood?
Commercial customers pay fees. Retail (personal) customers are just sources of cheap money (deposits) for the bank to make money lending out.
Why should I - as a bank customer - through fees - pay for your hobby?
It's easy for the bank to figure out the additional (incremental) cost of your hobby. If they charged that fee, would you pay it?

@BStrauss3 - Banks make a killing on their different fees. I can understand them wanting to charge a fee for ordering, although in almost 50 years of CRH'ing, I've never encountered a bank that requested a fee for ordering.

Banks are a business, it's not their job or responsibility to spend their money so you can hunt for free money.

Totally agree with @Bobby & @BStrauss. Coin roll hunters generally seem to have a sense of entitlement. We deal with both a bank and a credit union here in Canada . The credit union got smart .they charge for rolls . The bank got even smarter , don't even dream of asking , unless you are a business customer. CRH should do yourselves a favour and frequent coin shows Coin clubs and your local LCS or collector markets . But heaven forbid you might actually have to BUY a coin or two .

I've never had a bad or odd experience, but banks are getting pickier about giving out rolled coins (in exchange for other monies). At best, they want to see ID. At worst, they want you to have an account. You'd think I was trying to unload Fort Knox!
