2017-D-Ellis-Island-Quarter---3/4-Ring-Around-Washington's-Head.

I haven't seen reference to this particular imperfection but I am a complete noob to this. I found this Ellis Island squatter with a 3/4 ring around his head. It starts just under the A in states and ends around the end T in trust. It feels raised from the rest of the coin.

Have any of y'all seen this before?

to the CCF!

The ring is damage, most likely from a the crimping jaws on a Coin Wrapping Machine as Keith says. This coin was the end coin in the roll and the crimping mechanism cut the circle into the coin as it turned. The center of the line is incuse, but it may have some displaced material that is raised slightly above the fields.

We've seen many coins damaged like this over the years posted on the CCF. It's Post Mint Damage or PMD.
ANA ID: 3203813 - CONECA ID: N-5637 Clean a coin that may be worth collecting? Please DON'T! When in doubt, leave it dirty!!

Agree, mechanical Wrapping Machine Damage. We see similar features on coins--cents, nickels, quarters, etc.--often on this forum.
