I'm somewhat new to collecting. I found this 1962 penny in my change today. What does the CO mean on the obverse? I've never seen this before.

Just a counterstamp of uncertain origin. Probably the outline of the state of Colorado.

btw, best to not touch the surfaces of coins, particularly ones in high grade, as doing so leaves fingerprints which will hurt their value

Well the counterstamp counts as damage, so it's worth face value unless you find someone who collects these things. In that case, I'd guess under a buck, but you should check ebay sold prices for other states (if Colorado) doesn't happen to pop up to get a better idea.

no mint mark means it was minted in Philadelphia, the CO in the 'square' is the state outline and abbreviation of Colorado.
