1910 Lincoln Cent with the transitional reverse.

Just heard that VV has listed a 1910 DDR (Class III) with a transitional reverse from 1909.

Here's the link.
http://varietyvista.com/01a%20LC%20...0PDDR001.htm

They have also added 6 new 1909 DDR (Class III) listings.

These are part of what was discussed in the new issue of Errorscope (May-June 2023). The article goes into depth about two galvanos and four master hubs.

As I understand it the "N" of UNITED ("Shallow Cut" or "Deep Cut") was one of the markers for the transitional varieties.

Yes, it is interesting.

Thanks for posting this. Do you have any idea of how many are 'out there'?

Me? Not a clue.

With this just having been accepted I'm not sure if there is a way to get an accurate count.

There would have been only one die for each variety. I don't know if there has been any determination on what die state any of them made it to. That might be one way to try and determine a range for quantities.

EDIT:
I just remembered I lost out on a 1909 transitional reverse a couple of months ago before knowing about them. I thought it was 1DR-005 or 008 which was thought to be "Master Die Doubling, or reduction lathe doubling" as described on Coppercoins. I can remember I thought it looked neat and wanted an example.
1DR-005-

1DR-008-

Rats! I'm guessing someone in the study snatched that one out from under me.

Just came across this thread. It's been a year now and the 1910 rev 09 only has a population of 11 in all grades and all are in the NGC population report. In addition the total 1909 Class III DDR's are now at 70 total for both the P mint and SF mint. The book on this was released in August of 2023, The Rabbit Hole of the 1909 Lincoln Wheat cent and is available on Amazon. I authored the book and two chapters are co authored covering the Blohm Hoard and the FS-1102.

I still have that CC plate coin Cliff. I got screwed on ANACS attribution. From the time I sent it in and they graded it, CC changed it to MDD. So I got a grade only. No plate coin or 1DR attribution. Now they don't seem to know what it is or not and have it as 1DR-005. That was the only VDB on any site back then. I think all them 09 "DDRs" are goin over board myself

I would encourage you to read the book or view the YouTube videos for the short version. When my research started a year ago it n the Class III the challenge was made to figure out if the class three was a mistake or intentional. Only way to prove intent I was told was there had to be quite a few different dies. This has now been proven by the amount of different dies. To prove that die cracks in different places along with die gouges and die scratches have been cataloged. To those being made aware for the first time it seems like overkill and a minor variety. Once you read the what why and how tho it becomes quite the story. Check it out for free on the Neuman Numismatic Portal as this is now part of their research library!
