1. Are US Commemorative Coins worth collecting, or would my money be better spent on something else like US Mint Silver Proof Sets? And... 2. A guy near me is selling the 1998 RFK-JFK two coin commemorative coin set for $50 less than Red Book price. Seems like a deal. Should I grab it? Likewise, he's selling some US Mint Silver Proof Sets about $10 under Red Book. Should I grab these, too? (I may not be able to afford them all, so I thought I'd nab the RFK-JFK set...with best savings.) Any dangers of which I should be aware?

Suggest checking ebay completed sales information for the items in question. Will give you a good sense for what these are goin for recently.

ijn1944, I know this sounds odd in today's world, but I haven't used ebay. Will they post the final selling price? In general, I think you'd advise me to wait and follow items on ebay before jumping at what might not be that great a deal after all?

Are you talking about Classic US commems, or modern ones?

Is there a series you prefer more than the others? I am a rabid Morgan dollar collector so I enjoy reading and looking at Morgan's. This leads to me knowing what to buy and cherry-pick varieties and under graded/valued coins. Collect what you are interested in and the good deals and investment side will take care of itself. The RFK-JFK sounds like a winner to start with to me.

The JFK/RFK set on 2023 Red Book value is at $200.00, currently they are selling for about $130.00 on ebay, Also it is the only place you can buy the 1998 Matte finish for the Half dollars (if you collect halves.) I bought a set just to break out the JFK for my dansco album I may buy another at some point to keep the set whole. These are SOLD prices on ebay:

The great thing about buying commemorative cons, is you can collect and assemble a set anyway you want and still call it a complete set if you wanted.

Which set are you looking at? there are 2 of them: 1 has the Matte finish JFK, which is the more expensive one {at about $130.00) or the Proof 2 coin set? which is selling at about $85.00

to the CCF The answer to your questions depend entirely on what you like to collect. For most of us this is a hobby for enjoyment and not a way to turn a profit. Quote: Any dangers of which I should be aware? Yes indeed - the danger of thinking that you can turn a profit from the purchase of modern US mint issued coins.

Both sound like a pretty good deal. If that's what you want to collect that's fine. But, if you don't have a real interest than it's a pass.

Thanks, all! Clearly, I have a lot to learn. First and foremost, I need to learn can I trust ebay sellers? Would you say most sellers are trustworthy? Next, I decided to hold off on buying the 1998 RFK/JFK Commemorative set from this local seller. I'm going to do more homework and shop around before jumping in head-first.
