I am considering the purchase of one or the other of these 3-cent silver pieces. Both cost the same. I would appreciate your opinions on the grade of each and what it might be worth. Any white flecks are from the flip, not the coin. The darkness on the other example is toning. Sorry for the smallish pics. They are the ones I have to go by in my final decision. Both have liberal return policies. Thanks in advance. NOTE: I've added another photo of the second coin to more reflect the toning. The brown stuff on the reverse is just part of the toning. Both appear to be at least EF+/AU(don't ya just hate grading these tiny things), the shield lines are full and outline is almost fully separated from the star. On the reverse, the star pints have good separation. Overall, the second coin might grade slightly higher. I am almost certain the first one has been dipped, it is just too white. The luster seems muted compared to the actual amount of wear but of course the T1 3CS are only 75% silver so that does affect the appearance a bit compared to 90% silver coins. The second looks much more original and I can see more luster as well, especially around the stars. The only note of concern with that one is the brownish spot inside the reverse C- it could just be surface gunk that comes off in an acetone dunk or it could be a bit more permanent.

Maybe updated photos of the second coin will better identify the brown stuff in the reverse C as toning, rather than surface gunk. Does this change the opinions? Thanks.

First one looks like possibly a nice AU, second one a nice VF.

Quote: egads...once again I killed another thread... You know I gotta relieve you of that feeling. It's tough to say from the small pics, but I kinda favor the first one. Given the picture quality and common availability of this issue, I wouldn't go a whole lot more than $50 for either.

Just a final note: I purchased the first coin knowing there was a liberal return policy. I received it today and it looks far better in hand than in the photos; the details are sharper and the luster is present. It has no signs of obvious or harsh cleaning that I can see, even under glass. It is a very nice upgrade to my other 1853 silver trime which is in G/VG condition (and will be going up for sale shortly, whenever I can muster a presentable, if crude, photo). Thanks again for all of the opinions.

This is a good example of how misleading a photo can be. I posted seeing only your original coin #2 pics and now I see your new pics- I think have flip-flopped It is good to hear the the pics were just washed out and it looked much nicer in hand.
