What do you experts think as far as a grade goes on my newest acquisition?

The obverse is a little better than the reverse which looks to have a lot of wear. I'm going to say this would grade F-12 and might make F-15.

Either way, it's been harshly cleaned - the lines are obvious, especially on the obverse. No better than F12, and a melt-value coin.

F-15 but its worth a bit more than melt since it is a 34-S

I agree with the cleaning, although it is far less noticable in hand.

Quote: I agree with the cleaning, although it is far less noticable in hand. That raises a point - cleaning of this type is rarely noticeable in-hand because it requires kinda specific lighting, or a digital camera. For that reason, there's a lot of cleaned coins I'd be perfectly happy to own.

I am trying to figure out how do you know about the cleaning?
If I have ever done anything, its to wash with mild soap and water. Just to make sure any hand print oils are off the coin.
I am a beginner with this. Super Dave you mentioned a "Either way, it's been harshly cleaned - the lines are obvious, especially on the obverse. No better than F12, and a melt-value coin." What is the melt-value on this coin?
I have been looking at sites, what is the difference from a F-12 to a F-15. I can't find anything on that.

Quote: What is the melt-value on this coin? $10.71 as of 1:30PM yesterday. It varies, of course, with the price of silver. Note that I hadn't factored in the date and mint; this one's a relative rarity and will carry value above melt even though it's cleaned. The difference between F12 and F15 is pretty much a judgment call, based on the relative "strength" of the coin compared to the classic "Fine" description for that specific issue.

The fine lines covering the coin, predominantly on the obverse, are known as hairlines and are the #1 sign of a cleaning- they are essentially fine scratches from rubbing/wiping and that is why the value of the coin is reduced.
